Record #104776:

Field frost heave measurement and prediction during periods of seasonal frost / H.N. Hayhoe, D. Balchin.

Title: Field frost heave measurement and prediction during periods of seasonal frost / H.N. Hayhoe, D. Balchin.
Author(s): Hayhoe, H. N.
Balchin, D.
Date: 1990.
In: Canadian Geotechnical Journal. (1990.), Vol. 27(3) (1990)
Abstract: Heaving was measured for two winter seasons on clay loam soil near Ottawa, using linear displacement transducers attached to metal frame anchored in soil below depth of frost penetration. Output was recorded hourly using microcomputer-based data logger. System functioned reliably and observed data compared well with published measurements. Soil temperature was recorded simultaneously and unfrozen water content measured, which showed that soil temperature measurements can be used to estimate temperature gradient at freezing front for determining cumulative frost heave, as suggested by Konrad-Morgenstern theory of ice segregation processes.
