Dependence of Antarctic surface mass balance on temperature, elevation, and distance to open ocean / M.B. Giovinetto, N.M. Waters, Charles R. Bentley.
Title: | Dependence of Antarctic surface mass balance on temperature, elevation, and distance to open ocean / M.B. Giovinetto, N.M. Waters, Charles R. Bentley. |

In: | Journal of Geophysical Research. (1990.), Vol. 95(D4) (1990) |
Abstract: | Latest compilations of surface mass balance, mean annual surface temperature, and elevation were used to obtain areally integrated means for 24 ice drainage systems and 329 grid point values covering whole Antarctic ice sheet. Monthly summaries of remotely sensed sea-ice data for 1973-76 were used to obtain mean annual distance to open ocean. Linear and second-order regression analyses of surface balance on temperature for entire ice sheet, elevation for conterminous grounded ice, and distance to open ocean for ice shelves were made using both system means and grid point values. Analyses show correlation coefficients of 0.63-0.81, and provide bases for descriptive models of present ice sheet. |
