Abstract: | Recent observations of glacial flutes in central Barents Sea represents first direct evidence of existence of grounded ice in this region: glacial flutes suggest ice recession by calving without surge. Ice-marginal features, till ridges and glaciomarine deposits are concentrated in two distinct water depths along present-day 300 and 150 m contour, suggesting halt of 500 to 1000 years in ice recession at each level. Due to lack of sufficient amounts of datable materials in glacigenic sediments, timing of recession can only be discussed in relative terms. |
