Abstract: Arctic sea ice forms mainly over shallow continental shelves so that more lithogenic sediment is included than in Antarctic sea ice, which forms mainly over deep water. Subsequent seasonal surface melting and winter freezing of Arctic ice underside results in surface accumulation of particulate matter. Rafting of floes over and under each other results in complex stratigraphy and redistribution of sediment. In contrast, Antarctic sea ice has only limited sources for sediment incorporation and mostly melts each year. Differences are illustrated by analyses of ice-crystal texture, c-axis orientations, salinity, δ¹⁸O in ice cores, and discussion of potential sediment input.
