Record #104737:

Origins and variations of nitrate in south polar precipitation / Michel R. Legrand, Séverine Kirchner.

Title: Origins and variations of nitrate in south polar precipitation / Michel R. Legrand, Séverine Kirchner.
Author(s): Legrand, Michel R.
Kirchner, Séverine.
Date: 1990.
In: Journal of Geophysical Research. (1990.), Vol. 95(D4) (1990)
Abstract: Analyses of firn and ice cores collected summer 1983-84. Presents new NO₃ profiles covering various time periods (up to last 1000 a). This detailed, long-term record permits discussion of possible NO₃ variations in relation to solar activity: 11-year solar cycle over last decades, minima of solar activity, and solar proton event of 1972. Impact of other events, such as nuclear tests, meteor fall of 1908, volcanic eruptions, and Kepler (1604) and Tycho (1572) supernovae, which have been suggested as disturbing atmospheric NOx budget, are reexamined. These data allow discussion of NO₃ background level of high-latitude precipitation in terms of sources, transport and deposition.
