Abstract: Data from cores drilled in polar ice sheets show correlation between past glacial-interglacial temperature changes and inferred atmospheric concentration of gases such as CO₂ and CH₄. These and other palaeoclimatic data are used to assess role of greenhouse gases in explaining past global climate change, and validity of models predicting effect of increasing concentrations of such gases in atmosphere.
