Record #104717:

Ice particles and electron "bite-outs" at the summer polar mesopause / George C. Reid.

Title: Ice particles and electron "bite-outs" at the summer polar mesopause / George C. Reid.
Author(s): Reid, George C.
Date: 1990.
In: Journal of Geophysical Research. (1990.), Vol. 95(D9) (1990)
Abstract: Rocket measurements of electron density profiles in polar summer mesosphere have frequently shown existence of sharply bounded layer of thickness about 1 km in which electron density is depleted considerably below value that would be inferred from densities above and below. Suggests this is caused by scavenging of electrons by small ice particles existing in this environment. Possibility is explored quantitatively, with aim of reaching some conclusions about particles, as revealed by electron depletions. Results suggest that radii are likely to be 10 nm or less and to have smaller sizes and larger concentrations than those responsible for visible clouds.
