Record #104692:

One hundred years of Arctic ice cover variations as simulated by one-dimensional, ice-ocean model / S. Häkkinen, G.L. Mellor.

Title: One hundred years of Arctic ice cover variations as simulated by one-dimensional, ice-ocean model / S. Häkkinen, G.L. Mellor.
Author(s): Häkkinen, S.
Mellor, G. L.
Date: 1990.
In: Journal of Geophysical Research. (1990.), Vol. 95(C9) (1990)
Abstract: Main aim was to investigate behaviour of ice/upper ocean system on climatic time scales, especially asymmetry of freezing and melting seasons. Coupled model was applied to period 1880-1985, using published surface air-temperature fluctuations. Analysis shows that variability in summer melt determines variability in average ice thickness. Annual oceanic heat flux from deep ocean and maximum freezing rate and associated nearly constant minimum surface salinity flux did not vary significantly interannually. This implies that oceanic influence on Arctic ice mass is minimal for range of atmospheric variables tested.
