Record #104580:

The geology of subalpine heaths in the Abisko valley, northern Sweden. A study of periglacial conditions / Melanie Josefsson.

Title: The geology of subalpine heaths in the Abisko valley, northern Sweden. A study of periglacial conditions / Melanie Josefsson.
Author(s): Josefsson, Melanie.
Date: 1990.
In: Uppsala Universitet. Naturgeografiska Institutionen. Rapport. (1990.), Vol. 78 (1990)
Abstract: Study of active and inactive processes which influence formation, structure and distribution of subalpine heaths in Abisko valley. Compares their ecotope with that of adjacent birch forest. Geographic distribution, morphology, ground thermal regimes, water balances, soils and frost heaving mapped during 1984-87. Seasonal frost processes are reinforced by local climatic factors and edaphic conditions, resulting in development and maintenance of periglacial features in environments where they would normally not be expected to occur. Results also indicate that environments created by cryogenic processes, where once established, can survive over long periods irrespective of climatic fluctuations.
