Abstract: Considers role of art as source of understanding for people who try to cope with themselves and world they inhabit. Argues that act of desanctifying art and bringing attention to it as medium which relates to world can give us deeper understanding of how we comprehend symbols and construct cultural meanings. Exemplified by response of students at art school in Kabelvåg (Lofoten islands, northern Norway) to theme of "Kabelvåg".
