Abstract: Based on 15 years' archaeological research in Kabelvåg, Svolvaer and environs (Lofoten islands, northern Norway). Discusses interpretation and presentation of evidence for various audiences. Describes four variations on history of Vágar (with incidental reference also to Saami history) and sketches contexts in which these histories exist. Gives examples of local reactions to academic archaeologists, and stresses need to involve community.
