Abstract: Discusses study of history of non-European peoples as exemplified by Saami-Norwegian relations during last two centuries. Suggests that processes of individual cultural change (incorporation and assimilation) can be studied profitably as almost universal aspect of colonial relationship, and that political process of colonization need not necessarily coincide with sociological process of assimilation.
