Abstract: Assesses geophysical processes of the Southern Ocean and their role in causing the region to be treated separately from the rest of the world's oceans. Addresses relevant international legal developments, including the Antarctic Treaty System and the Law of the Sea, examining how and why different maritime zones and boundaries of jurisdiction have been delimited, the legal rationalisation for the promulgation of these zones, and their geopolitical significance in the context of resource activities.
