Proposals for the first Australian Antarctic Expedition: an appraisal and reappraisal of the proposals and efforts of a joint committee formed by two of Melbourne's learned societies during the 1880s / Lynette Cole.

Title: Proposals for the first Australian Antarctic Expedition: an appraisal and reappraisal of the proposals and efforts of a joint committee formed by two of Melbourne's learned societies during the 1880s / Lynette Cole.
Author(s): Cole, Lynette.
Date: 1990.
Publisher: Melbourne: Monash University. Department of Geography and Environmental Science
Abstract: Using previously unanalysed primary source material, recounts efforts of the Antarctic Exploration Committee (A.E.C.), formed by members of the Royal Society of Victoria and the Victorian Branch of the Geographical Society of Australasia. Formed in 1886, the A.E.C. never succeeded in mounting an expedition, credit for the 1911-14 Australasian Antarctic Expedition going instead to the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science. Provides insights into attitudes towards science, commerce and exploration in the late 19th century.
