Analysis and modeling of melt-water refreezing in dry snow / W. Tad Pfeffer, Tissa H. Illangasekare, Mark F. Meier.

Title: Analysis and modeling of melt-water refreezing in dry snow / W. Tad Pfeffer, Tissa H. Illangasekare, Mark F. Meier.

In: Journal of Glaciology. (1990.), Vol. 36(123) (1990)
Abstract: Intended to provide physical basis for estimating rate of freezing of liquid water introduced into cold porous matrix. Dynamic zone of thermal disequilibrium is described which separates wet snow at 0°C from dry sub-freezing snow. Zone may be eliminated by thermal equilibrium through freezing, but is sustained and propagated into sub-freezing snow by water flow from wet snow. Width of dynamic zone is controlled by rate of water inflow, and by rate of freezing of water onto sub-freezing ice grains, which, in turn, is controlled by ice/water geometry. Equilibrium times and freeze-on mass fluxes are calculated for various general conditions.
