Intensity of satellite radar-altimeter return power over continental ice: a potential measurement of katabatic wind intensity / F. Rémy, C. Brossier, J.F. Minster.
Title: | Intensity of satellite radar-altimeter return power over continental ice: a potential measurement of katabatic wind intensity / F. Rémy, C. Brossier, J.F. Minster. |

Abstract: | Analyzes factors affecting power return (automatic gain control, AGC) of Seasat radar altimeter above continental (Antarctic) ice. After corrections, remaining variations of AGC are of order of 15 dB; most are large scale (>100 km) and are correlated with katabatic wind intensity. This suggests that AGC measures either surface roughness or grain size. In-situ measurements support evidence that radar altimeter is more sensitive to surface scattering. Data could therefore provide measurement of intensity of katabatic winds. |
