Record #104187:

Functional response of browsers: tree exploitation by moose / Per Lundberg, Kjell Danell.

Title: Functional response of browsers: tree exploitation by moose / Per Lundberg, Kjell Danell.
Author(s): Lundberg, Per.
Danell, Kjell.
Date: 1990.
In: Oikos. (1990.), Vol. 58(3) (1990)
Abstract: Describes testing of functional response model together with three "classical" models, using penned moose [Alces alces L.] feeding in artificial stands of birch in winter in Lycksele Zoological Garden (Västerbottens län, northern Sweden). 33 successful experiments, on one bull and one cow, were performed between mid-December 1987 and mid-March 1988. Concludes that functional response models that assume constant handling time and/or attack coefficients with varying prey densities cannot be appropriate for browsers. "Patch" models, involving optimization of handling time for each ramet, appear to be more appropriate.
