The prey and diving depths of seabirds on Hornøy, North Norway after a decrease in the Barents Sea capelin stocks / Robert T. Barrett, Robert W. Furness.
Title: | The prey and diving depths of seabirds on Hornøy, North Norway after a decrease in the Barents Sea capelin stocks / Robert T. Barrett, Robert W. Furness. |
Author(s): | Barrett, Robert T. Furness, Robert W. |
Date: | 1990. |
In: | Ornis Scandinavica. (1990.), Vol. 21(3) (1990) |
Abstract: | Comparison of diets collected fron seven seabird species breeding on Hornøy in 1983 and 1989 showed that, despite much lower capelin stock, they caught higher proportion of capelin in 1989, but fewer sand eels [Ammodytes sp.]. Sand eels, on which they appear to be more dependent than anticipated, may have declined in abundance. Seabirds on Hornøy may also exploit separate, late-spawning fjord stock of capelin during chick-rearing period. Median maximum diving depths attained by guillemots, razorbills, puffins and shags reflected distribution of prey more than birds' diving abilities. |
