Abstract: Examines spatial characteristics of phytoplankton pigment concentration during period of little or no net ice retreat and low irradiance levels in order to assess temporal extent of ice-edge phytoplankton blooms and their significance for regional productivity. Based on in situ observations of pigment levels and ice data derived from satellite passive microwave observations. Satellite observations covered eastern and western Weddell Sea and western part of Antarctic Peninsula. Blooms do not appear to be feature of spring and summer, but extend into austral autumn. May contribute significantly to regional productivity.
