Record #103943:

On western Finnish toponymy in Archangel Karelia / Matti Pöllä.

Title: On western Finnish toponymy in Archangel Karelia / Matti Pöllä.
Author(s): Pöllä, Matti.
Date: 1990.
In: Linguistica Uralica. (1990.), Vol. 26(1) (1990)
Abstract: Isolates more than 20 toponyms of western Finnish origin, of which most reliable are Häme, Kemi, Oulu/Oula and Varjakka. Varjakka toponyms seem to have been used by Saami for naming trade routes of Norwegians (Varangians). Archaeological data from adjoining territories indicate that inner water routes in Archangel Karelia were used during 6th-10th centuries by Norwegians for making commercial or military expeditions to White Sea coast (probably to Bjarmaland), until discovery of sea route to White Sea, when Archangel Karelia came under influence of seasonal hunters and traders from south-western Finland.
