Abstract: Evidence of severe contamination from atmospheric testing before Chernobyl accident in April 1986, with resultant effect on health of native population: lead level in osseous tissue of reindeer herders is 10-20 times higher than among people who do not eat reindeer meat; caesium 137 level is 100 times higher. Average life expectancy of Chukotka natives is only 45 years and general morbidity is high, with particularly alarming incidence of various kinds of cancer and appearance of tumours of connective tissue, bone and thyroid.
