Abstract: Paper is based on Marjut Aikio's "The cycle of language shift among the Sámi", 1988, studying language shift in 5 villages in Lapland. Aikio claims that Finland aimed to assimilate Saami and still does, though translating religious literature into Saami. Canon law proposal of national Church, 1989, makes no mention of Saami language, despite fact that Finland ratified Article 27 of UN agreement on political rights. Church shows positive examples to promote language, but no official policy on multiculturalism is divulged.
