Abstract: | Origin of siida idea, based on water courses and watersheds, and history of several Saami siidas from 1671 is related. Sections deal with Skolt Saami's special situation, numbers in the four siidas and treatment by state. Permanent migration from Varanger at same time as settlement of Finns and Norwegians is described, with setting of Russian-Norwegian border in 1826. Then came mining and forestry in early 20th Cent. Suonjil siida was last stand of hunting Saami, crushed by WW2 and denial of border area. Its Saami flitted to Lake Inari. |
