Abstract: | IX. Book consists of 286 Saami joiks (juoigos) collected from 1972-1975 among reindeer herders in Kautokeino, Norway. Lyrics are accompanied by introduction describing role of joiks in community life, some 50 musical transcriptions and ethno-musical analysis. Most joiks evoke person, by physical or moral trait, or relate anecdote. They often serve to reinforce social relationships between kin or herding partners, or indirectly to criticize individuals, such as deer rustlers. Poetic and social control is conveyed through complex set of stylistic figures such as euphemisms and metaphors. Accompanying tape is at Tape (*55) : 78.031[Lapp] |
