Chemical communication in Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) during spawning / THórarinn Sveinsson.
Title: | Chemical communication in Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) during spawning / THórarinn Sveinsson. |
Author(s): | Sveinsson, THórarinn. |
Date: | [1989] |
Publisher: | Akureyri, Iceland: University of Akureyri |
In: | Líf undir leidharstjörnu. ([1989]), |
Abstract: | Olfactory system of Arctic charr is selectively extremely sensitive to prostaglandin F2α, but less sensitive to testosteroneglucuronide. Furthermore release of immunoreactive F-series prostaglandins to surrounding water increases during spawning activity. This suggests that prostaglandins are used as pheromones in this species. Mature charr males are more "odorous" than mature females or immature fish. This may suggest that males use "chemical display" on spawning grounds. |
