Abstract: Polar stratospheric clouds can be composed of nitric acid trihydrates (type I PSCs) or of ice (type II PSCs). Lidar echoes obtained at South Pole have been studied and criterion for distinguishing these two types has been applied based on sensitivity of backscattering to temperature. Water vapour vertical profiles in presence of clouds has been inferred and evidence for its removal by clouds is discussed.
