Abstract: Models likely effects of sea-ice cover on acoustic transmission across array in Greenland Sea, where it will remain for about one year. Three types of icefield are considered: mixture of young, first- and multiyear ice from typical marginal ice zone with ridging; array of floes with no ridging, characteristic of extreme ice edge; and pancake--frazil mix growing on open sea. Concludes that measurable changes in travel time will occur, and that their value as means of monitoring ice thickness depends on accuracy with which sound velocities in sea ice are known. In addition scattering loss may be large enough to affect signal-to-noise ratio significantly.
