Abstract: Published in 1992. Field work in September 1989 showed that glaciers were larger during Pleistocene than previously assumed. In Shirouma-dake/Hakuba area, two periods of glaciation could be distinguished: more recent, terminating in lower Kitamata at 930 m and at mouth of Minami-mata at 840 m, and earlier, when glaciers of both valleys formed joint tongue reaching down to 770 m. At western side of Tateyama, large glacier covered volcanic plateau, with long tongue into Shomyo valley, terminating at 460 m.
