Abstract: | Finns took initiative in October 1988 to identify possibilities for coordinated multilateral action; proposal (launched in January 1989) included invitation to take specific intergovernmental measures for establishment of criteria and standards concerning human activities that have impact on Arctic environment. Recommended that effective notification and consultation systems should be developed. Working paper associated with proposal identifies most important threats to Arctic environment: climate change, pollution of marine environment, and exploitation of living and non-renewable resources. |
