Long-term trends in river flow in Finland / Veli Hyvärinen, Raija Leppäjärvi.

Title: Long-term trends in river flow in Finland / Veli Hyvärinen, Raija Leppäjärvi.
Author(s): Hyvärinen, Veli.
Leppäjärvi, Raija.
Date: 1989.
Publisher: Helsinki: Valtion Painatuskeskus
In: Conference on Climate and Water, Helsinki, Finland, 11-15 September 1989, convened by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). (1989.), Vol. 1.
Abstract: Selection of long-term Finnish discharge observation series (1847-1988) has been analyzed. Annual discharges have generally increased slightly, especially in 1980s, but this could be due to either climatic change or climatic fluctuations. Winter discharges have increased by as much as 20% in some Finnish lakes in 20th century, in line with results obtained from climate models, which suggest that both precipitation and temperature are increasing as result of greenhouse effect, especially at northern latitudes in winter. Observation sites included Marraskoski (1919-88), Karunki (1911-88) and Saukkoniva (1921-88) drainage basins in northern Finland.
