Abstract: Present UK National Snow Survey system has some limitations. Describes potentially operational daily and/or weekly snow area mapping procedure for application over UK. Algorithm includes subroutines relating to snow condition assessment and is independent of ground information or alternative imager. Procedure requires digital ancillary data in order to describe spatial distribution of snow. Cannot yet provide absolute measurements of snow depth or snow water equivalent, and is limited in application where cloud obscures snowpack. Even so, information derived far exceeds capabilities of present system.
