Abstract: Records of runoff from rivers draining basins of between 1.9 and 66.6% glacier cover in Rhone catchment, Switzerland, were examined together with records of air temperature and precipitation for period 1930-1987. Precipitation was more variable from year to year than thermal input. At higher levels of glacierization, energy input dominates runoff variability, whereas, at lower levels, precipitation variation was main influence. Considerable variations in discharge from highly glacierized basins have resulted from underlying secular variations in energy inputs.
