Abstract: Derives description of stress distribution in granular material in horizontal plane. Equation of motion is solved for ideal granular material deformed under action of uniform external force field and associated scaling factor of geometrical and dynamical similarity derived. Description is applied to interpret large-scale features in sea-ice deformation fields and to give expression for width of coastal sea-ice transition zones in terms of sum of external forces and level ice thickness associated with deformations.
