Abstract: Describes Habbakuk scheme, devised by Geoffrey Pyke during Second World War. Designed as floating airfield in middle of North Atlantic Ocean for refuelling aircaft. Constructed of Pykrete: frozen mixture of water and wood pulp. Tests were carried out in Canada, in laboratories and on lakes. Work on project ceased with termination of war.
