| Abstract: | During July-August 1985, 828 icebergs were recorded on southbound passage, and 1090 during northbound passage. Sharp decrease in sitings between 69° and 70° S, corresponding to major centre of cyclonic gyre located at about this latitude. Dominant shapes of icebergs were pyramidal, tilted, or overturned, i.e. shapes indicative of disintegration. South of 70° S, number of tabular and dome-shaped icebergs was greater than distribution typical for these shapes in other areas of Southern Ocean.
