Abstract: Meteorological observations throw light on Ross Sea Low (deepest cell of atmospheric pressure on Earth) and on travelling cyclones associated with it, which result in highest monthly mean wind velocities on Earth along Marie Byrd coast, reaching 12-13 m/sec in some months. High levels of cloud cover and high humidities are also characteristic of this environment. Anomalous sequence of three cyclones in row, which approached Russkaya Station from north-east (instead of more normal direction of north-west), probably contributed to ice conditions which led to Mikhail Somov's besetment. Concludes with detailed analysis of weather conditions recorded during drift. Translation in Polar Geography and Geology, 1989, Vol. 13, no. 3, p. 171-181.
