Abstract: | Discusses "repression" (dismissal, exile, imprisonment, torture, or execution) in USSR in 1930s, in context of those working in Soviet north: scientists, ship captains and administrators were all at risk. Those involved in disastrous 1937 navigation season, when 26 ships were forced to winter at various points along Northern Sea Route as result of diversion of icebreakers and operational polar aircraft to search for S.A. Levanevskiy's aircraft, suffered particularly. Author gives details of fates of many famous Arctic scientists and explorers, including R.L. Samoylovich, M.M. Yermolayev, N.I. Yevgenov and N.N. Urvantsev. |
