Abstract: Reports Canadian Ice Island observations on continental shelf adjacent to Axel Heiberg, NWT, of extensive areas beneath pack ice colonized by communities of siliceous sponge. Study of factors determining distribution and growth of modern polar sponge communities is argued to have important implications for understanding paleoecology of Palaeozoic demosponge-bryozoan bioherms in eastern Canadian Arctic Archipelago.
