Record #101137:

Climate variation and ice conditions in the river Torneälven / Gun Zachrisson.

Title: Climate variation and ice conditions in the river Torneälven / Gun Zachrisson.
Author(s): Zachrisson, Gun.
Date: 1989.
Publisher: Helsinki: Suomen Akatemia
Abstract: River constitutes boundary between Finland and Sweden, and has been subject to several severe breakups. Joint project has now been started, aimed at measures to diminish this damage. Studies of breakup show that it has occurred much earlier this century than in past (observations made since 1693). Comparisons with air temperatures from 1860 onwards indicate some agreement between earlier dates of breakup and general temperature rise up to 1940. Winter temperature is less important that that in April. Severe breakups were found to be mainly associated with water level due to meteorological factors and, also, changes in catchment area such as forestry practices and removal of dams.
