Record #101028:

The "skinn" values of pilot whales in the Faroe Islands. An evaluation and a corrective proposal / Dorete Bloch, Martin Zachariassen.

Title: The "skinn" values of pilot whales in the Faroe Islands. An evaluation and a corrective proposal / Dorete Bloch, Martin Zachariassen.
Author(s): Bloch, Dorete.
Zachariassen, Martin.
Date: 1989.
In: North Atlantic Studies. (1989.), Vol. 1(1) (1989)
Abstract: With reference to long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melas) traditionally hunted for subsistence purposes. Since 1584, whales have been assessed according to "skinn" and since 1832 regressive divided rod has been used. Skinn value represents length of whale from eye to anus: 314.5 cm = 20 skinn = 1 gyllin. Today 40 rods exist. They differ so much that new hypothetical rod is proposed which starts slightly higher than today's average and extends farther, from 1 to 13 and from 22 to 31 skinn. Includes map of Faroe Islands' pilot-whaling districts, and appendix of measurements of all 40 assessing rods used today, proposed rod from 1809/1819 and authors' proposal.
