Abstract: Mechanical properties of snow are described in terms of its microstructure. Restrictions imposed by second law of thermodynamics and principle of material frame indifference are used to describe constitutive law in general way. Constitutive theory is then completed by developing governing evolution equations which show how microstructure changes during loading. Microstructure is described in terms of grain size, bond radius, neck length, coordination number, and intergranular slip distance. Sample calculations for simple stress states are provided.
