Abstract: Study questions recommendations of Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) published in Waste disposal in Antarctica (1989) on six points: lack of independent verification of data; unlikelihood of incinerators being fitted with recommended scrubbers and precipitators; inevitability of toxic chemical emissions; necessary disposal of contaminated ash; dispersion of toxic contaminants in sensitive coastal areas, with unknown effects; and general uncertainty about operational characteristics of plants, scale of emissions and environmental effects.
