Polar Bytes - No. 23, July 2002

A few words from the Chairman, Philippa Foster Back

Last minute deal

You will find in your envelope today details of a cruise on the Explorer with Abercrombie and & Kent. We are extremely grateful to A&K for offering a discount of 35% on Cruise No. EX230 to South Georgia and Antarctica from November 6 - 24, 2002. Another special feature is that the price includes the charter flight airfare from Santiago-Stanley/Ushuaia-Santiago.

Please see the enclosed flyer for further details and note the roles of Kim Crosbie and David Wilson.

Please let Ann Bean know if you are interested (tel.01895 271141 or email friendsofspri@aol.com) although please note that bookings should be made direct with Bob Simpson at Explorer Shipping, quoting Friends of SPRI.

The Shop:

At the end of August Ruth Fleming leaves the Institute. She has done sterling work in re-organising the shop and its stock and our congratulations and thanks go to her for what she has achieved. We also send her our best wishes as she takes up her studies again for a Master's degree in Museology. The Institute is advertising the post.

Nominations for the Committee:

This December John Heap and David Powell both retire by rotation from the Committee. I should like to thank both of them for their tireless support in the work of the Friends and their ideas which have helped to further our work. I am therefore seeking nominations. Should you wish to nominate someone, please, per Article 5(v) of our constitution, send Ann Bean a letter of nomination with names and addresses of two seconders together with a letter from the nominee giving their agreement to serve on the Committee.

Please forward such nominations to Ann Bean by August 31st. Nominations may be sent by email with the paperwork following thereafter. The email address is friendsofspri@aol.com

A few words from the Secretary, Ann Bean

Another very successful Summer Lunch was held in June at Girton College, giving Friends the opportunity to meet up with old Friends and to give a warm welcome to new Friends.

Having now had the lunch at Girton College for a few years is it time to try a new format - particularly in view of their price increase? If you have any thoughts on the type of lunch or suggested venues please let me know and we can start making enquiries for next year. You may, of course, prefer to continue at Girton.

AGM and Buffet Supper will be held on Saturday 16th November and further details will be included with the next issue of Polar Bytes.

I still have available a few sets of the signed British Antarctic Territory stamps, commemorating the Discovery Expedition. Cost £50 per set, with the proceeds going to the Appeal Fund.

As you know, since taking over as membership secretary I have been trying to reconcile the outstanding subscription queries - I think I am almost there! However, this exercise has thrown up quite a few lapsed subscriptions and now that these have been deleted from the membership list it has reduced our numbers to below 500. Perhaps we should re-introduce a previous Friends slogan "Friends please find a Friend".
