
Shackleton 100 event reports
Departure of Endurance from Plymouth
The three day event organised by the Devon and Cornwall Polar Society was great success. Around 200 people attended a range of events including:
* talks,including Michael Smith, Robert Burton and Wilson McCorist
* commemorative centenary dinner
* re-enactment of the sailing of 'Endurance'
* displays by the Antarctic Adventurers and the Shackleton EPIC expedition
* displays by the Shackleton Banjo Company,John O' Reilly, Fire and Ice
expedition and Shackleton Challenge expedition
* performance by folk musicians the Yelcho Trio
The event was attended by several descendants including Hon Alexandra Shackleton and descendants of Greenstreet, Wordie, Kerr and Rickinson. Also, there were Sir James Perowne ( James Caird Society), Donald Lamont (UKAHT), Dr David Wilson, Phillipa Foster Back and the Lord Mayor of Plymouth. Polar enthusiasts attended from Ireland, America and Australia
