Shackleton items from the Archives

The original South Polar Chart used during the Aurora Expedition

The Chart was used by the ten men stranded in the Ross Sea area of the Antarctic during Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, 1914-1917.
The men plotted their route across the ice and marked the positions of food and fuel depots on the chart in pencil.
It is just possible to see the pencil marks on the chart.
