Shackleton items from the Archives

A letter from Ernest Shackleton to his wife, Emily. March 1908

Shackleton and his men spent the winter in the Antarctic while the ship returned to New Zealand.

This letter was written by Shackleton shortly before Nimrod sailed. It would be the last contact he would have with the outside world until the ship returned to the Antarctic the following year.

Goodbye Darling wife
God keep you and our children. I think we will get the Pole. I cannot write more, my whole heart is with you.
Your husband
I am fit and well
