SPRI Review 2007: Freeze Frame: Discovering the Poles

Freeze Frame: Discovering the Poles

With funding obtained through the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) as part of their Digitisation Programme, we have commenced work on digitising some 20,000 images from the Institute's historic photographic collection. Frank Bowles and Jennifer Newbury began work in September 2007, providing high-quality digital images and related detailed catalogue entries which will be made available a new microsite <freezeframe.ac.uk> linked from the SPRI web pages to the wider world. The range of subjects represented in the project will cover the history of British exploration and science in the Arctic and Antarctic during the period 1845-1960, including portraiture, landscape, biota, shipping and aerial reconnaissance.
