SPRI Review 1998: Library and Information Service

Library and Information Service

World Data Centre C: Glaciology

Manager: Sally Stonehouse
Website Manager: Oliver Merrington

Following Oliver Merrington's transfer to Institute Website Manager, WDC-C was re-structured with Sally Stonehouse as Manager taking charge of WDC-C's bibliographic functions and Mr Merrington continuing to have responsibility for WDC-C's Internet site. WDC-C houses the largest specialist glaciological information centre in Europe, with a publications collection probably as large as anywhere in the world. Mrs Stonehouse's role is to ensure acquisition of all significant new literature and its accessibility through SPRILIB and other means. She is also responsible for WDC-C's contribution to Polar and Glaciological Abstracts. On Internet matters, Mr Merrington worked closely with the International Glaciological Society (IGS) on two projects. The Directory of European Glaciology [http://www.spri.cam.ac.uk/wdcc/deg.html] now posts completed directories for Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland, together with a directory of international organizations involved in glaciology. A UK directory, listing 62 university departments and independent organizations, is currently being checked by IGS. The other project has involved the transfer of the IGS website from the University of Chicago to the Institute by means of close liaison with Christina Hulbe at Chicago, transfer of HTML and graphic files, and then a complete redesign of the site. Additional pages have been prepared by IGS. The launch of the new site is planned for December 1998. Once launched, the IGS website will be maintained by IGS staff. Finally, a system of mirroring the WDC-A Data Catalog from Boulder (Colorado) has been achieved. This permits much more rapid (and cheaper) access from European organizations to the many datasets accessible at WDC-A.
