The Gino Watkins Memorial Fund, under the joint trusteeship of the University of Cambridge and the Royal Geographical Society, gives grants towards expeditions that meets its objectives of guiding and inspiring enterprising people towards scientific research and exploration in the polar regions.

The Committee of Managers of the Fund would like to thank the Augustine Courtauld Trust for their generous contribution of £8,500. The members of the Committee who served during the year were Mr D Fordham, (Chairman), Dr P. Adams, Dr I Campbell, Mr R Crabtree, Dr K Crosbie, Dr L Craig, Professor J Dowdeswell, Dr P F Friend, Dr D Goodman, Professor M Lea, Mr J Lowther, Mr J Muston, Professor R C Schroter, and Dr M Tinsley.

The Committee met on the 3rd March 2007, and made the following awards:

Expedition Description Award
Arctic Voice Expedition 2007-2008 To collect audio records of Inuit hunters and elders with regard to how the perceive their future, environment and life in light of climate change. The expedition will also be setting up educational links covering similar issues between primary schools in the UK and Arctic Canada/Greenland. £1,000
West Lancashire Scouts East Greenland Expedition 2007 - Ren Land

To offer developmental opportunities to develop leadership and organisation skills.

To experience and explore the Arctic Wilderness on land and on water by sea kayak.

To climb remote mountains and to undertake some scientific research and exploration.

Exercise Boreal Zenith To celebrate 50 years of Army Mountaineering by carrying out exploratory mountaineering expedition to Andrees Land. To climb as many peaks as possible, most of which will be first ascents. £1,000
Paddle To The Peaks Greenland Expedition 2007

Exploration of a remote area

Contribution of new climbing routes and to a greater knowledge of the region and its mountains

A holistic approach to exploration and climbing demonstrated by a leave no trace ethic, alpine style ascents, and perhaps most unique- paddling by kayak for transport

East Greenland 2007 Exploratory mountaineering and first ascents of previously unvisited area. £1,750
2007 Dronning Louise Land

To explore a previously unvisited part of Dronning Louise Land climbing peaks and ski touring.

To collect meteorite samples from the icecap to the west of the area.

Scottish Mountaineering Club East Greenland Expedition 2007 To visit the Staunings Alps. To attempt first ascents of 4 unclimbed peaks around the Lang (Stor) Glacier. To attempt first ascents of new routes of peaks around the Lang Glacier. To explore an unnamed subsidiary glacier and its surrounding peaks. To climb Bolvaerket and Norsketinde by new routes and/or the unconquered North Face of the Bersaerkertinde. £1,000
Disko Island 2007

To explore the southwest and central areas of Disko Island.

To undertake science projects in the valley Kuanersuit Kugsuat.

To travel on the Sermerssuaq glacier in the centre of the island.
