I am a geographer engaged in the remote sensing of alpine, boreal and high-latitude environments.

Current research projects

• Development of a phenological correction algorithm for remote sensing of industrial impact on high-latitude vegetation. Case study: Noril'sk, northern Siberia
  
• Study of the mudflow hazard and glaciation decrease in Central Caucasus:
  - mapping mudflow hazard in the Gerkhozhan-Su basin
  - study of the September 2002 catastrophic collapse of Kolka Glacier in North Ossetia

Participation in other projects at SPRI

• I am working with Prof Peter Williams and Isabella Warren on the Geocryology Publications Programme to create an English version of a Russian geocryological journal Kriosfera Zemli, which will be called Cryosphere. This is a part of SPRI's Russian Information Transfer Programme.

External activities

I am also working at the Aerospace Methods Laboratory at the Department of Cartography and Geoinformatics in the Faculty of Geographyof Moscow State University. My principal activities in the lab are:

• running Internet-based seminars and webpages for the Inter-University Aerospace Centre. The first four seminars were concerned with satellite imagery on the Internet(20-29 September 2000), image processingwith the freely available Multispec software (26 March - 13 April 2001), use of satellite images to teach the Geography of Mountain Regions in secondary schools(15 October - 2 November 2001) and new types of satellite imagery from the Terra satellite (8-26 April 2002).
  
• teaching an image processing module for an inter-departmental MPhil in Remote Sensing and GIS. This is a 'sister' MPhil to the Cambridge course and it has been developed within a Moscow-Cambridge REAP partnership
